Groton secures $15k for town’s trail network

Funding received through new state budget

GROTON — It can’t be easy to maintain 130 miles of walking, biking and horseback riding trails, but some funding recently secured should make a dent.

With the help of the Destination Groton Committee (DGC), Town Manager Mark Haddad said the town will be receiving $15,000 in state funding dedicated to improving the vast trail network. Chair of the Groton Trails Committee Paul Funch said the funding will aid in the important goal of connecting people with nature.

“We are excited by the state’s allocation of these funds for improving the experiences of walking, biking and horseback riding along Groton’s trails,” Funch said. “Groton’s trails connect citizens and visitors to its unique geological, historical, and natural features. These funds provide us with an exceptional opportunity to enhance Groton’s trail infrastructure for the benefit of all.”

In addition to the DGC, Haddad also recognized the much-needed support from the town’s representation in the Massachusetts State Senate.

“The Town of Groton is grateful for the efforts of State Senator John Cronin to secure these funds in the state budget,” Haddad said.

Cronin, D-Fitchburg, also commented on the funding, saying he was proud to be able to assist the town in maintaining one of its recreational assets.

“I am pleased to support the vision of Destination Groton and its mission to preserve and promote the many attractions Groton holds for both residents and visitors alike,” Cronin said in a joint release. “Groton is known for its many scenic trails and I share in its pride.”

DGC chair Greg Sheldon talked about the group’s goals for preservation and the desire to continue them.

“The Destination Groton Committee has been working to promote Groton and its many attractions while working to preserve the beauty and charm of the Town we all love,” said Sheldon. “We are pleased to have the strong support of Senator Cronin and look forward to continue working with him in the future.” For further information on Destination Groton visit: DestinationGroton.com
