Destination Groton Awarded $20,000 Grant to Celebrate America’s 250th
Groton, MA – July 7, 2025 — “I am pleased to announce the Destination Groton Committee has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the FY2026 Massachusetts 250 Grant Program,” said Town Manager Mark Haddad. “This competitive grant supports local programming that commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and promotes tourism throughout the Commonwealth,” Haddad added.
The grant will fund Groton Celebrates America’s 250th, a dynamic campaign that shines a spotlight on Groton’s unique and inspiring role in the Revolutionary War. With roots deeply embedded in our nation’s founding, Groton’s contributions will be brought to life through a multi-platform initiative that includes:
- A marketing campaign promoting Groton’s free self-guided audio walking tour of 16 Revolutionary landmark sites;
- Public events in partnership with the Commemorations and Celebrations Committee;
- A ceremonial dedication honoring thirteen fallen Groton Minutemen originally buried in Boston Common;
- A historical lecture series engaging residents and visitors alike in the town’s revolutionary legacy.
“Groton’s commemorative programming will run from January through December 2026, offering residents and visitors a series of ten celebratory events commemorating the 250th Anniversary of our country, and to explore the town’s Revolutionary heritage,” Don Black, Chair of the Commemorations and Celebrations Committee said.
“We are honored by MOTT’s recognition and investment in Groton’s efforts to celebrate this historic milestone,” said Greg Sheldon, Chair of the Destination Groton Committee. “This grant will help us share Groton’s untold Revolutionary story with a broader audience and strengthen our town’s profile as a vibrant destination for history, culture, and natural beauty,” Sheldon added.
“The Destination Groton Committee also wishes to thank those who submitted a Letter of Support along with our application including State Senator John Cronin, Representatives Margaret Scarsdale and Danillo Sena, John Amaral Principal Partner from the Groton Inn and Jeff Gordon, President of the Groton Business Association,” Sheldon stated.
Last year, nearly 400,000 visitors came to Groton, contributing over $35 million to the local economy. The Destination Groton Committee expects this campaign to build on that success and contribute to Groton’s sense of civic pride.
